Deer Day 12 - Sun Oct 27

Davey and I hit the golf course early this morning and walked in while it was still dark. Davey returned to Hole 15's green while I hit the creek below Hole #4's tee box.  It's 32 degrees at 7:00 am.

I had deer snorting N and S of me.  I saw three to the S, but they were all on Sigler's where we can't hunt. Didn't matter anyway, as they were all too far for a shot.

Davey had a couple snorting S of him on top the hill, but no eyes on.  He did, however, see the six turkeys again.  That's cool.

We called it quits by 9 and not due to golfers or workers - as there was a nice frost on the ground and the course will not let golfers out until it has cleared - usually around 10 or so.  Nope, we were off to help Geordie recover a deer.  He shot one last night at 7 yards with his primitive Osage bow and napped arrowheads.  He thought his shot was low and back, so he let it sit overnight.  Geordie called as I hit the truck.  Deer recovered, but not before the coyotes at half of it - and the best half, the back.

We drove on over and helped Geordie skin and clean it.  Turns out what he thought was a yearling doe was a button buck.  We saved what we could - Mother Nature gets the rest.

Geordie with his Osage self-bow and napped arrowheads.  First primitive kill!

On our way out of Geordie's, we drove past Marshall's.  As we exited the gravel lane, we saw two nice doe and Dave said there was a sweet buck behind those two - which I never saw.  Total deer count for this morning - Craig 5 and Dave 3.  We made it home by about 11:30.  Time for lunch and a nap.

The kids and I loaded up at 4 and headed back out.  Nick sat on Vice and saw only 500 squirrels.  He did have a doe wheezing at him to the S, but never put eyes on.

Alex had a buck strolling through Marshall's picked beans.  He grunted it back toward his stand.  It never got closer than 60 yards and continued NE.

Kathy, about 200 yards to Alex's E saw nothing but squirrels.

I walked in the bottom and jumped a doe on Bailey's.  It was about 30 yards away, but again, on property we cannot hunt, so it didn't matter how close it was.

Davey did not go to his stand on Marshall as Harold was picking beans.  He sat on the ground to the NE hoping something would come by.  Vain hope.

I sent the 'All Come In' text about 6:30.  My legs hurt from standing all day and I had not even seen a squirrel. Kathy replied Meet at Truck.  It was not tough to convince them to call it off and go eat.  I picked those two up and we gathered Nick.

I had put ribs in the oven this morning to slow cook all day.  Upon our return, I put them on the grill while Sandy and Shelby made scalloped potatoes - homemade none the less.  We all ate well while watching football.

Tomorrow brings an airplane ride and a trip to the range.  Tuesday is our "Opening Day" for elk.
